4. Alisal Cellars
www.alisalcellars.com
Alisal Cellars is located in the basement of the Paaske Building, next door to the Solvang Bakery on Alisal Road. It is the oldest and largest wine cellar in Solvang. It was originally established in 1964, and is currently owned and operated by the Sinclair family. They feature over 450 wineries from all over the world. This is a fine wine shop where you can sample and purchase both local and imported wines. They also have daily tastings of beers from around the world, and on the weekends they offer both champagne and sake tastings. There is also a small coffee bar, which serves some of the best espresso found in Solvang.
5. Five Wine Bar
Just upstairs from Alisal Cellars is an enclosed, heated patio area that houses 5 Wine Bar, which combines the best aspects of a charcuterie and a wine bar. As a charcuterie, they offer a selection of artisanal meats and cheeses, for you to create your own small plate. Wine is sold by the bottle or by the glass, or you can choose from an impressive list of microbrews, imported beers and ales, sparkling wines and sakes. They also offer pastries and desserts. Open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
6. Bellissima Wine Bar
Bellissima Wine Bar, on the south side of Copenhagen Drive near the Solvang Restaurant, is owned and operated by the Sinclair family of Alisal Cellars, and opened in late June of 2005. Like their sister store, they feature some of the world’s finest wines and champagnes, specializing, of course, in the wines of the Santa Ynez Valley. Guests may purchase selected wines by the glass, which they can “enjoy in a friendly relaxed atmosphere.” They also have a very extensive gift shop with wine related-gifts, as well as an espresso bar that serves what they say are “the best espresso drinks this side of Italy!”
7. Royal Oaks Tasting Room
www.RoyalOaksWinery.com
Royal Oaks Tasting Room, located on Copenhagen Drive, at the corner of First and Copenhagen, is one of the “best kept secrets” in the Santa Ynez Valley. Royal Oaks Vineyard was planted in 1998 and their 18 acres include Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Semillon. They also produce Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, and a Bordeaux blend called “Aristocrat.” The wines of Royal Oaks are less tannic, less acidic and less oaky than many others, so they are soft and silky on your palate.
If you are a wine drinker who prefers a sweeter style of wine, Royal Oaks offers a selection of semi-sweet wines. The tasting room is comfortable and informal, and each month different artists’ works are displayed.
8. Lion’s Peak
www.lionspeakwine.com
A few steps west on Copenhagen, Jennifer Soni and her friendly staff invite you to taste their ultra-premium, award-winning Lions Peak wines. They offer a wide selection of Whites, Rhones, Reds and Meritages, including dessert wines and handcrafted, award-winning estate Cabernet Sauvignons.
Each of their wines and artistic wine labels has a story you will enjoy. One special white wine is named “Lulu” after Jennifer’s daughter. Another wine, which was made from a blend of grapes, is called “The Sisters,” which received a “Best of Class” award and has been written up by Appleation America. These multi-award-winning wines, beginning with their 1994 Cabernet Sauvignon, taste as good as their stories suggest. So stop by and enjoy!
